Oakland-based sculptor and metal fabricator Courtney Brown has converted an old typewriter into a charming octopus sculpture that she named ‘Self Organization’.

The center of her sculpture is a 1938 Underwood typewriter to which she attached bronze tentacles.

On her website, Courtney states: ‘Self Organization refers to both self-replicating robot technology and the struggle to attain self hood. In an age where we are looking ahead to the Singularity, our minds are opened to ideas about what it means to have Self, how it is achieved and how it creates itself. Within each of us is a struggle to attain self organization, self actualization, self realization’.

The sculpture recently won first place at the annual California Sculpture SLAM at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art.
