Cognitive Surplus is a store owned and run by Portland-based couple Kristen & Geoff Zephyrus where Kristen is the ‘science-nerd’ and Geoff does the designing.

Together, the couple creates chemistry inspired glassware under the motto ‘smart gifts for smart people’.

Scientifically accurate, each piece contains the chemistry equation of its designated liquid. For example, the coffee mug is imprinted with the chemical formula for the caffeine; while the tall glass is etched with the water formula.

In addition to the clever glassware, they also celebrate the most famous scientists. Albert Einstein and Marie Curie are just two of the brilliant minds whose portraits were engraved in tall beer glasses.

Their products are meant to help people look more closely at the world, seeing the science of the everyday.

“We are fascinated by and curious about the science in the world around us. We love everything from physics jokes to the exquisite beauty of early scientific etchings and illustrations. We’re inspired by a sense of wonder for our universe and a desire to look closer. Everything from gazing up at the night sky to the way magnets work is both intriguing and a little magical, and we hope that we’re able to share some of our excitement through our designs.” the couple states on their website.

Their entire collection of science-inspired products is available for purchase in their Etsy Shop.
